The Agency was established as a special health authority in 2003. On 1 April 2005, the Agency was established as a non-departmental public body with radiation protection as part of health protection incorporated in its remit.

From 1 April 2013 the Health Protection Agency will transfer its statutory functions to Public Health England (PHE).

We are looking to recruit a part-time research nurse to spend 15hrs a week working with the bio-surveillance team, within the Virology and Pathogenesis group at HPA-Porton. The group are conducting a sero-surveillance research project on UK military personnel to ascertain the incidence of infection with vector-borne pathogens whilst deployed on exercise or operations overseas.

As part of the team, the post-holder will be responsible for the recruitment of volunteers to the study from collaborating military units, obtaining consent from these volunteers, and collecting pre-deployment and post-deployment blood (serum) samples from them. The post-holder will also be responsible for maintaining records/databases of volunteer information both confidential and critical to the study, and liaising with military & civilian medical staff as required.

This post would suit an experienced research nurse who is seeking to develop his/her role within the field of microbiology/infectious diseases. Previous experience in bio-surveillance or microbiology would be an advantage.

The post-holder must be an experienced Registered Nurse and, preferably, a car driver. Relevant experience in working in, and setting up, mobile clinics/field work, clinical research, serology and infectious disease would be viewed as advantageous. You will be a good communicator, able to work in a team but also prepared to take on responsibility and work individually - planning and managing your own workload, as appropriate. Applicants should also be able to provide evidence of further professional development.
