The successful applicant will contribute to facilitating a positive learning environment in practice with practice placement responsibilities within the partnership placement providers across North Wales. The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute as required to the planning, implementation and evaluation of educational activities for n ursing at both undergraduate and post graduate level.

The successful candidate would be expected to work within their own professional field of practice and across specialties.

The Applicant must:
  • be registered with NMC with experience in a relevant field or fields of practice
  • have a degree in a relevant subject area
  • have experience of being a mentor/sign-off mentor
  • have experience of teaching and facilitation of learning in theory and/or practice
  • have knowledge of the Practice Educator role (or similar) and relevant NMC frameworks and standards
  • a working knowledge of the Welsh language would be a distinct advantage

Although the ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post, the School would especially welcome candidates who have a fluency in the Welsh language.

School of Healthcare Sciences

The School of Healthcare Sciences mobilises its expertise and experience to generate new solutions to health challenges by leading health care research, scholarship, teaching and learning that is of the highest possible standard, quality and value to service users, practitioners and stake holders. Our mission is to be an international example of best practice in partnership-working with students, professionals, health and social care services, and policy makers in the generation (research excellence) and application (teaching excellence) of knowledge to improve healthcare, health and wellbeing (impact).

The School is the sole provider for pre-registration education for the nursing, midwifery and radiography professions in north Wales. We host a fully accredited Clinical Trials Unit, with research centres or clusters around health economics, primary care, evidence synthesis, implementation, service user perspectives, rehabilitation, and bilingual aspects of healthcare. We achieved an excellent outcome in the REF, placed in the top 20 of 94 Universities entered in Unit of Assessment 3. The quality of our research outputs was rated in the top 3. Purpose of the Job

This role is to support students’ learning in practice by developing the learning environment in student placement areas. This will be achieved by working in partnership with Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board (BCUHB) and other colleagues, and empowering sign-off mentors and mentors to develop a quality learning environment in which all learning is optimised.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Work in partnership with NHS and University colleagues to deliver the School’s strategy for practice learning, supporting the development of practice learning environments that facilitate an optimal learning experience for students.
  • Act as a resource of information, evidence and advice on practice learning and mentoring to clinical and University staff.
  • To provide students with support in practice and help support their learning and integration of theory and practice
  • Liaise with University staff regarding placement issues.
  • Liaise with Managers, Practice Placement Staff and other Practice Learning Facilitators
  • Support sign-off mentors/mentors and students in strategies to evaluate and develop the practice learning environment that reflects contemporary practice provision (e.g. by helping mentors and students to investigate, examine and reflect on their practice through discussion, and making suggestions for improvement).
  • Support mentor development to achieve and maintain local and national NMC (2008) Standards, by contributing to mentor preparation courses and updates.
  • To develop mentor key skills required to teach, assess and facilitate learning through a proactive approach and engagement with mentors in educational preparation and practice.
  • To participate in the development, facilitation and teaching of sign-off mentor preparation programmes.
  • To be involved with clinical managers in the identification and selection of mentors and sign off mentors.
  • To be involved with Health Board staff and other partners in the identification of potential practice placements, aligned with organisational processes and responsive to local priorities, with knowledge of supporting short, medium and long term workforce and practice learning capacity.
  • To support the provision of clinical skills training, and other relevant undergraduate teaching within the University skills laboratory.
  • To contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including supervision of projects as appropriate.
  • To provide pastoral and academic support to undergraduate and postgraduate students as appropriate.

Administrative duties may also include:
  • Participate in the student recrui tment and induction procedures of the School
  • Contribute to the School and participate in the administration of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
  • Contribute to the marketing of programmes by participating in School link activities and other marketing initiatives.
  • Undertake other administrative duties and responsibilities as directed by the Head of School or Deputy Head, Teaching and Learning with Practice Education remit.
