You will be involved in providing direct nursing care in a variety of different clinical settings.

'There are many similarities between my job and that of a civilian nurse but there are a number of key differences. My clinical role is important to me as I enjoy caring for patients and I like being part of a military team. I have been well supported in my clinical role and well trained for my military role, which involves using those same nursing skills but in a different environment. Recently, I have been involved in transferring patients by air (aeromedical evacuation), I have worked in an overseas field hospital and been on standby to support high readiness UK forces.
The RAF activity encourages professional development. I am about to start a post-Registration course and the RAF provides the upmost professional and personal support (time, finance and professional direction) â€" I didn’t even have to ask for study time â€" it was expected that I would need time to study.
During basic training, I was taught how to operate in a military team, use a weapon and march in preparation for our graduation parade. I completed the RAF Aeromedical Evacuation course before being assigned to the Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, based at RAF Brize Norton. I have travelled to countless different counties to assess and prepare patients before flying them back to the UK.'
My Day 'I get a lot of personal satisfaction from my nursing role. I especially enjoy the acute wards and the military lifestyle. I have attended two ceremonial events and met several members of the Royal Family.
I attend the RAF gym several times each week and I have recently joined the RAF Martial Arts Association. I am looking forward to my promotion course and becoming a Sergeant and then moving into the Sergeant Mess. Nursing is a responsible job and the RAF manage you as an individual â€" it makes you feel professional.'

Your career will start with a 10 week Basic Recruit Training Centre (BRTC) at RAF Halton. The course is designed to help you adjust to a military environment. As well as fitness and military training, you’ll also learn about the RAF lifestyle.
Specialist Training
PMRAFNS provides the opportunity to specialise in accordance with service requirements. The Nurse Education Advisor (NEA) provides advice and guidance for those wishing to study on a full or part time basis. Successful applicants will be seconded.
Additional Qualification Opportunities
As a qualified RN(A) you will be expected to maintain your currency in clinical practice and to be active in your professional development as a nurse. In consultation with the NEA you will have the opportunity to undertake further education and training throughout your career, developing you as a clinician.
Ongoing Training/Development Opportunities
In preparation for your overseas role you will complete Deployed Operational Nursing Competencies (DONC) under the supervision of mentors. PMRAFNS prides itself on equipping you with the necessary skills to operate to the highest level in your peacetime and operational role; militarily you will undertake short training courses with the RAF Regiment, RAF personnel are also eligible to apply for Adventurous Training (AT).
Your First Tour
Princess Mary’s RAF Nursing Service (PMRAFNS) requires highly skilled and broadly experienced nurses; therefore, on arrival to your secondary healthcare unit you will begin a clinical rotation programme. This will allow you to be mentored through several clinical specialities that are relevant to military nursing, such as surgical and medical assessment units and orthopaedic trauma. In your time within secondary healthcare you will be caring for both military and civilian patients which will prepare you for your role on military operations overseas. During this period, you will also complete any necessary military skills training such as the Aeromedical Evacuation course.
Your Future
During your time at Recruit Training Squadron (RTS) you will be working at the rank of Aircraftman (AC) and on successful completion of basic recruit training you will progress to your first Unit appointed to the rank of Acting Rank Corporal (AR Cpl). On completion of the Junior Management and Leadership Course (JMLC) and Trade Management Training (TMT) you will be eligible for promotion to Cpl. Further promotion to the rank of Sergeant (Sgt) and beyond is by competitive selection.
Career Prospects/Progression
You will initially join the RAF for a period of twelve years on a Notice Engagement with effect from 1 April 2015. Pay, pension and service beyond the initial engagement (up to a maximum of age 60 years) are linked to your performance and rank progression. During your time at Recruit Training Squadron (RTS) you will be working at the rank of Aircraftman (AC) and on successful completion of basic recruit training you will progress to your first Unit appointed to the rank of Acting Rank Corporal (AR Cpl). On completion of the Junior Management and Leadership Course (JMLC) and Trade Management Training (TMT) you will be eligible for promotion to Cpl. Further promotion to the rank of Sergeant (Sgt) and beyond is by competitive selection. PMRAFNS actively supports the development of personnel through funded study. NEA is on hand to offer advice and guidance. The Non Medical Practitioner (NMP) qualification is available for those nurses wishing to enhance their current qualifications.

If in the future you wish to leave the Service your experience, further clinical training and managerial dexterity will make you highly competitive within the civilian job market.

Your training will start with a Basic Recruit Training Course (BRTC) consisting of 4 weekends at your chosen RAF Reserves Squadron, followed by a 15 day residential training course at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire. This training course will prepare you for service life in one of the most respected military forces in the world; it is also designed to help you tune into the military environment and way of life. As well as military training, you will learn about the core values, code of conduct and history of the RAF, as well as its unique lifestyle.

You must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). However, candidates may apply in their final year of RN(A) training - up to 12 months before RN(A) qualification and whilst waiting for NMC Registration.
